What’s Open & Closed on Juneteenth?

On Wednesday, June 19, banks and post offices will be closed in observance of Juneteenth, while major restaurant, grocery, and retail chains will remain open.

Retail giants like Target, Walmart, Starbucks, and Costco, among others, will be open on the federal holiday. However, the stock market will be closed.

Juneteenth, recognized as America’s Second Independence Day, has been a federal holiday since 2021, offering millions of Americans a paid day off to celebrate the end of slavery. The holiday marks the arrival of Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger in Galveston Bay, Texas, in 1865, where he declared that more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free—two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Walmart stores will operate from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Juneteenth. Costco warehouses will be open, and Target stores will also be open, though hours may vary by location.

The U.S. Postal Service will halt retail transactions and regular mail deliveries, but Priority Mail Express will still be delivered. UPS and FedEx services, including their stores, will be operational.

Banks such as Capital One, Bank of America, Citibank, and Chase will be closed. Home Depot and Lowe’s will operate regular hours, but it’s best to verify with local stores. Ace Hardware, being independently owned, will have varying hours.

Walgreens and Rite Aid locations will be operational, with customers encouraged to check online for specific hours. Restaurants like Starbucks, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and others will be open.

Grocery stores such as Walmart, Raley’s, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Safeway will remain open.

Retail stores open on June 19 include:

  • Target
  • Kohl’s
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods
  • Bass Pro Shop/Cabela’s
  • REI
  • Burlington
  • TJ Maxx
  • Marshall’s
  • HomeGoods
  • Gap
  • H&M
  • IKEA
  • Macy’s
  • Old Navy
  • Nordstrom
  • Office Depot and OfficeMax
  • Staples
  • PetCo
  • PetSmart
  • Tractor Supply Company
  • Big Lots

Check with your local stores for any variations in holiday hours.
