Sacramento County Invests in Homeless Housing Solutions

Rio Linda, CA – Sacramento County has taken a significant step towards addressing the homelessness crisis by approving a $19.4 million investment in two innovative housing projects. These projects aim to provide shelter and housing for individuals exiting homelessness directly off the American River Parkway.

Clarifying Misconceptions

There has been some misinformation circulating regarding these projects, including the total cost, the types of housing being provided, and the timeline for implementation. It’s important to clarify these points:

  • Cost: The $19.4 million will be used to fund both affordable housing units and increase shelter beds.
  • Housing Types: The projects include both permanent supportive housing units and scattered site shelters.
  • Timeline: The County has been diligently working on this plan since receiving the state grant in April 2023. Delays in land acquisition contributed to the timeline.

Project Details

  • Residence Inn: $8 million will be used to purchase 32 beds at the Residence Inn for Supportive Housing. These units will be capped at 30% Area Median Income (AMI), ensuring affordability for those exiting homelessness.
  • Scattered Site Shelters: $5.5 million will expand the number of scattered site shelter beds by 50, focusing on housing assessment and readiness.
  • Additional Funds: $5.9 million will be allocated as a capitalized operating reserve (COSR) for the 32 units, ensuring long-term affordability.

Addressing Homelessness on the Parkway

The County has been actively working to address homelessness along the American River Parkway. Partnerships with community health workers and outreach programs have been instrumental in providing support and services to individuals living unsheltered.

This investment in housing solutions demonstrates the County’s commitment to addressing the homelessness crisis and creating a more compassionate and inclusive community.
